Student Evaluations & Feedback (including Winter 2017)

See public SAIL evaluations from Cal Poly students at http://wahoo.cc/sailevals

Throughout the whole process of figuring out how to teach (still quite the work in progress), I've been spending a lot of time thinking about the people that have impacted my time in education. I think the biggest thing I've learned so far is that the best thing I can do for my students is treat them like fully formed, complex thinking, competent humans. I appreciate that you both always treated me in that way, so I just thought I'd take the time to let you know that how much I valued it.

Email from an alumnus who took KINE 320 @ Cal Poly during Winter 2016 and is now teaching overseas

This guy is a LEGEND. I don't remember the last time a whole class has clapped for a professor the last day of lecture. Prof. Rubenstein is a god. It was a pleasure to be a student of yours. Your class was very interesting and intriguing.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

Professor Rubenstein really made a night lab that lasted from 7-10pm an enjoyable lab. Would take another class with him if he taught more classes.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2015

I think that you did a great job conveying information to us! Regardless if the class followed any structure or if students didn't know what their grades were, your passion for the subject and your willingness to go out of your way to help students succeed outshined everything! Also, your honesty of saying how this is the first class and we were used as the guinea pigs, was much appreciated by the students. Any professor could have gone up there and been arrogant and tried to bullshit us into thinking they knew what they were doing, but the fact that you didn'y do this says a lot about you as a person. You treated each student with respect and honesty and really valued our opinions. That is a quality that many of us have not seen here at Cal Poly and hopefully other teachers catch on to what you are doing. You are great!

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2014

I really enjoyed the lectures because the professor was always really animated and made learning fun. Not only that, the topics he taught and we learned about were really interesting. I know that I can definitely apply what I've learned in this class now and when I begin to work full time in my future career.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2016

I didn't have any coding experience going into this class and Brandon made it so easy to learn and everything I learned is so applicable.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2016

The blog making was really applicable because I might have to do this later in life! I also learned a lot of useful info about the internet.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2016

Brandon did a really great job following through with us, making sure we knew what the projects were, etc. Brandon is really kind, engaged, and a great communicator. Although I dont love technology, I learned some really great material that will be a skill in my near future.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2017

HE IS AWESOME! He is super helpful when needed knowing that not that many people know how to design a website!

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2017

The professor was my main resource when looking for help. The coding and designing everything was really confusing for me and he was really helpful. Also, just searching for things on google was really helpful too.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2017

He needs to teach more classes.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2017

Teacher was really nice and entertaining. He made the class interesting and was very helpful/easy to approach. This class was beneficial for my career and showed me a different perspective in promoting my skills via resume on my website

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2017

After going over material in the lab, Brandon would let us work by ourselves and stay on standby if we had any questions. This was really helpful because it helped me realize what I did and didn't know and cleared up any confusion I had when I made mistakes in my coding for my website.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2017

[What assisted your learning in the course?] Always available to help!

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2017

The material was interesting, the professor was great, and he made the class fun. He was always available if we had questions or concerns about the class.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2016

He's a super nice and understanding teacher.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2016

[The most valuable part of this class was] Assigning HTML and CSS. I had learned html in the past so it was a nice refresher, but it also taught me lots of things my middle school web design class didn't teach me. Additionally, it was interesting learning a second language and seeing how different they were.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2016

[The most valuable part of this class was] All the information he gave us on Internet security and all the dangers involved.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2016

[The most valuable part of this class was] Real life application of things learned in class.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2016

I like the videos and the examples that were relevant to current events. I also appreciated the information about passwords and online security that I didn't know before.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2016

I now know a great amount about technology and coding.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2016

The material learned is very applicable to today's society.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2016

I like the videos and the examples that were relevant to current events. I also appreciated the information about passwords and online security that I didn't know before.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2016

I liked how funny and entertaining Brandon was, because I am not very interested in technology and it made it much easier to listen when the lectures were funny.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2016

Brandon you are a phenom teacher all around and the way you care about the students is a really special thing.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2016

Brandon is a great professor and connects well with the students.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2016

This lab was one of the most valuable classes I've taken at Poly. I am coming away from the lab with a blog I am proud of, a coded website that illustrates who I am and what I do, and a stronger sense of technological ability. I felt every assignment was important and perfectly challenging.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2016

In all honesty I thought the lab was a hugely valuable use of my time and I am coming away from it having learned so much.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2016

Brandon, thank you for your openness and the amount of effort and time you put into our success. This class has been so important for me and you have been there helping us through it at every point. Thanks for everything.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2016

Even though coding is not my favorite activity, I'm happy that we learned how to do it and I feel like I have a better understanding of technology.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2016

[The most valuable part of this class was] How helpful the teacher was in lab

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2015

This is a great class. It is one of my first classes I have taken in a while where the information is actually valuable in the real world.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2015

One of the best professors I have had. Made a 6-7pm class/7-10pm lab worth it.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2015

Best class I have had in a while!

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2015

Always provided great feeback for our projects

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2015

I enjoyed learning how to code and hope that I can use it in the future. The fact that I have a website I can show future employers is great and advantageous to me.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2015

[The most valuable part of this class was] Learning how to incorporate technology into the science of Kinesiology. Learning how to code, blog, and make videos

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2015

I now have my own website and I am very comfortable coding, creating videos, and blogging. The class content was applicable to the real world.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2015

I liked how some lectures were delivered electronically instead of canceling the classes. The ted talks and podcasts that we watched/listened to were really interesting

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2015

Learning all about copyright was very interesting because I didn't know that we could get in trouble by the law just by using someones picture that we find online. Learning the ways we can use online material was very helpful in assuring I use the proper material.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2015

Master Rubenstein is a great, entertaining teacher.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2015

He is an awesome instructor who made me excited to learn about technology!

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2015

Enjoyed this class a lot more than I thought I was going to. Prof Rubenstein made staying until 10 pm really fun

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2015

Professor Rubenstein really made the material he covered in class interesting. His quirky jokes added to his method of teaching and allowed his students to enjoy the subject of media and technology in Kinesiology. He made a night class enjoyable.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2015

Super fun and hilarious professor.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2015

[The most valuable part of this class was] The one-on-one time to have him answer questions in front of our computer screens.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2015

Learning HTML and CSS was the most interesting part of lab. Learning to code seemed to be like learning another language at first, but after awhile it was very satisfying knowing how to do it.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Spring 2015

I really liked that many of us were pushed out of our normal comfort zone and encouraged to learn something that we do not have a strong basis of knowledge in. Learning more in depth details about the technology we use every day will be very beneficial to our future professions.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

I got the opportunity to learn things that I never thought I would learn. If it wasn't for this class I never would have learned all of this stuff about the Internet or the basics of making a website. I'm very happy I had the chance to gain this knowledge.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

The instructor's ability to present the course material was in a clear and organized manner. He had a great amount of knowledge of the course subject matter. The instructor's patience and helpfulness in dealing with students was the best, along with the instructor's fairness in his grading methods.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

This is one of the coolest classes I have taken as a kinesiology major!! I feel that I learned so much information that could definitely be applied later on. I also feel that this class was an opportunity to learn CSS and HTML because unless you're a computer major, I don't know when else I would have learned this! I know that these are skills that could be impressive on a resume and I definitely think it was worthwhile learning how to learn CSS and HTML.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

Mr. Rubenstein has already edited the class since the first quarter he taught and it is much better already.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

Professor Rubenstein is one of the greatest teachers!!

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

Loved coming to class and learning something new everyday! Thank you!!!

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

Mr. Rubenstein is a great teacher, he is definitely very knowledgeable about the subjects he teaches, and he creates a very comfortable environment in his classroom in which there is a mutual respect for teacher and student. i really enjoyed having his as a teacher, and hope he gets more opportunities to teach at cal poly and show his talents.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

Professor Rubenstein was a very helpful teacher. His lectures could have been a little more condensed, but overall he is a very passionate teacher. He knows his material and presents it in a way that is funny and relatable for students. The only critique would be to minimize the tangents and make class/lab time more efficient.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

Master Rubenstein, you know the information well and you can much us laugh. A great combo. Thanks!

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

Great guy, friendly, funny, approachable, available for questions, enjoyed your class.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

Loved the class and learned a lot. Especially liked doing projects instead of memorizing a bunch of information for a test.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

Great teacher. easy to relate too, smart, and every once and a while he tells a good joke.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

Professor Rubenstein, this class was literally so much fun. I don't think I've ever taken so much joy from a class. I feel accomplished that I have now created a website, started a blog, and now have basic skills in HTML and CSS!! You're awesome professor, perfect for this class!

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

LEGEND

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

I thought the screen in the front of the lab that showed what the instructor was doing so that the entire class could see was the most important to our learning. Coding websites is very tricky for those of us with no prior experience and that helped A LOT! Professor Rubenstein taught us skills so that we will have the basic knowledge to utilize media and technology in our future professions and/or make sure our companies/projects are not getting ripped off by a web designer that we would potentially be hiring.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

[The most valuable part of this class was] The instructor's ability to present the course material was in a clear and organized manner. He had a great amount of knowledge of the course subject matter. The instructor's patience and helpfulness in dealing with students was the best.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

Thank you for a wonderful quarter, Master Brandon!

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Winter 2015

Brandon provided assignments that allowed us to explore the world of media, but relate it back to our main focus of Kinesiology related topics. I was able to learn how to blog, which I believe is a great skill that I can apply to many different aspects of my academics.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2014

The instructor made class fun to be at. He did not go into great detail but did more of an overview which I found more valuable just because I will remember all that I was taught in class appose to most classes where you memorize a ton of material and forget most of it.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2014

I definitely learned a lot from the different social media sites we explored; I had never used Twitter before so it was neat seeing how it worked and how I could use it to interact with other organizations that I may not have otherwise. I also found the overall project helpful; although I don't think I'll continue developing my project, I have other ideas in other areas that I could really put to practice what I learned through the main project in this class.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2014

This is actually one of the first classes that I have taken that I can relate to all areas of my life. It is a great skill to have and will be very useful for me in the future.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2014

Having group discussions were important as they allowed collaboration and the sharing of project ideas. Lab time was the most integral part of the course as that was when we could apply the media and technology techniques we learned in lecture.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2014

Awesome class and awesome teacher. I liked learning about how technology could be used to promote a health campaign and how it is relatable to our major.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2014

I really enjoyed this class and Professor Rubenstein really knew what he was talking about and had a lot of experience in the area. I feel it was a very practical subject and I definitely got a lot out of it.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2014

Brandon provided clear step-by-step instructions for each lab and assignment, and with his vast knowledge of media-related topics, was able to answer any question we had.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2014

I learned so much about media and technology that I didn't know before. The most valuable part of this lab was learning how to make my own blog and how to update it.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2014

I felt video editing was extremely valuable for me; it's a form of media I haven't really worked with a lot, so being exposed to it was very useful.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2014

Interacting with other students as well as having one-on-one time with the professor was extremely helpful.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2014

Learn by doing. Having access to the computers and actually working on our assignments in lab and having the help the instructor was very useful. Everything we learned in lab could be aplied to our outside life and is a very valuable tool to have learned.

KINE 320 @ Cal Poly, Fall 2014

Professor Rubenstein is an excellent teacher. He is helpful, honest and always goes the extra mile to help students in anything and everything school related. This is my favorite class. I am learning a lot, the workload is just right. The class lectures are interactive and informative. More importantly, the class lectures directly correspond to the homework and reading from chapters in the book. I hope to have Professor Rubenstein for future classes!!!
